SECURITY CAMERAS – EYES AND EARS OF CRIME PREVENTION
For many people, the concept of cctv brings to mind an image of a man in a non-descript office, wearing a non-descript uniform staring (often blankly) at a sea of screens. It’s possibly an image perpetuated by the often fictional world of movies – but it’s certainly not representative of where modern cctv technology is at.
True, in the past, much of cctv security cameras surveillance was reliant upon the operator who was manning the screens and monitoring what was going on. They had an extremely tough job that demanded incredible skills, concentration, a good memory, excellent observation skills and intuition – yet it wasn’t humanly possible for even the most skilled officer to be aware of everything that was going on.
These days, security camera technology is vastly different and hugely impressive. Some of the modern features include weatherproof and tamper-proof cameras, cameras that detect motion, ones with automatic lens control and biometric technology which enables face and feature recognition. Camera technology now also makes it possible to film at night and in dimly lit areas.
Advances in technology enable cameras to detect where people are behaving inconsistently (eg going against the flow of traffic) or pick up where an object (eg suitcase, package) has been left in one place for a long time.
Internet protocol and wireless connectivity also enables end-to-end interconnection and improved visual information options as well as enhanced flexibility. New digital video recorders (DVR)s are also capable of storing weeks of recorded data which is particularly useful for criminal identification and prosecution. Some cctv cameras can also be operated remotely, which means less reliance on manual surveillance and security personnel.
One of the most exciting breakthroughs in recent times in cctv technology is audio capability. That’s right – see no evil.... and speak no evil because there are now cameras that can hear!. According to the BBC, a British company has developed software that analyses the pitch, intonation and tone of people’s voices and noises, interprets the situation according to stored data and then alerts the authorities if the situation is deemed to be threatening.
It’s not a microphone in a security camera, but rather a complex software system that basically analyses audio ‘fingerprints’ and as soon as a sound is received that resembles a stored sample of a dangerous or threatening situation, the alarm is raised and relevant authorities notified. CCTV security cameras could become ears as well as eyes in the fight against crime.
Are we placing too high an expectation on the effectiveness of cctv in crime prevention? A report quoting an expert on CCTV security systems in Perth, Western Australia says that people have too high an expectation of the technology. People expect it to be a detection tool, but the reality is that there is no detection. His view is that cctv is not intelligent technology yet and until it is, its effectiveness will remain in the hands of the operators and depend on their skills.
Whatever one’s view on the effectiveness of CCTV, there is no doubt that as the technology develops and becomes more sophisticated, security cameras will grow in value as important weapons against crime.

Frequently Asked Questions...
where do you put true crime nyc save games for pc?
I've downloaded a savegame for true crime ny but I don't know where to put it please help me!!!
Thanks
also, how do you give out police tickets to pedestrians thanks again!!!!
Answer:
The saved files for that game are kept in a folder in "My Documents". Or, "Documents" if you're in Vista. However, it is a common problem that the file doesn't come up in game once you've copied it over so make sure your in game save file and the one you downloaded are the same file type. There are things like language and regional settings to think about with game saves. A Japanese X Box 360 game file won't work in an English PC Game, despite them being the same game.
