You do need an actual hard drive on your 360 to play the backwards compatible games. The 250GB Slim model has one. The 4GB model does not. It has internal storage and will not play the BC games unless you add one. You also need the BC update and you'll need to make sure the game is actually compatible. Not all original Xbox games are.
