The debate that surrounds the abortion issue is often a heated one.   Politicians from both political parties often have capitalized on this emotion to ensure campaign contributions and votes.  Conservative Southern Democrats and Republicans alike often pander to the pro-life constituency but have been either unwilling or completely ineffective in protecting the lives of the unborn.  Personally, I believe strongly in the right to life.  As she struggled for liberty our nation stated in the Declaration of Independence that Americans have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  If elected I propose to put the issue to Tennesseans in the form of a referendum.  If the people decide that abortion should be prohibited except where the mother’s life is in danger, then we will implement that policy.  If the people decide that we should maintain the status quo, then the state government will respect their wishes.  It is my belief that good government should reflect the will of the people and not dictate to them.  No matter which side of the issue you stand for your voice will be heard and the reason democracy exists will be reinforced.  There is no excuse for our politicians to continue to use this issue as a polarizing tool to divide the people.
