Malware And Trojans: A Portal For Corporate Fraud
There are several legal and non-legal issues that are relevant in the cybercrime and white collar crime world of business fraud. For example, how did malware become known as malware? Looking to the definition of malicious, it's described as an inadvertent harm and/or collateral damage. When is bad software really malicious, and what are the damages from computer intrusion? In the cybercrime world, malicious behavior has currently risen beyond mere negligence, it's now apparent that it and other crimes have combined today into a vicious form of business fraud and white collar crime.
Many cybercrime security professionals have noted that by 2007, hacking had become a seriously profitable business enterprise in the US, as well as worldwide, and practiced by a growing number of underground software sellers and computer developers. Hacking was no longer considered a hobby - it's now become a portal to multiple layers of business fraud and white collar crime.
In cyber-world, the software exposure of stolen credit card numbers and spammed emails make consumers very vulnerable to online fraud and identity theft. The hacking software market installing Trojan software has expanded within the underworld of cybercrimes, the theft of identities and fraudulent use of stolen credit cards are targeted because of their substantial financial value. This underground software is currently widespread and is bought, sold, and traded online, surprisingly by both genuine security companies who are "providing a service" and by disreputable hackers and theives. Today’s underground cybercrime sites use surprisingly well-developed business practices to peddle Trojans and flog viruses, stolen data, and attack services, resulting in massive business fraud schemes. The report, issued by Symantec, established that cyber criminals have become professional and commercial in the expansion and delivery of malicious code and services, the result of which is business fraud and exploitation of stolen identities and financial information.
Although cybercrime and similar white collar crime activities are first most driven by financial gain and greed, cybercriminals are using very efficient and professional attach schemes and strategies to perpetrate their crimes, that can lead to many types of business fraud. The black market is currently valued at one hundred and five billion, and is still growing. Malware programmers are currently producing new, distinctive threats that target businesses and their employees every few seconds. Over the last few years, there as been a very substantial growth in this online shadow community. This fraudulent online economy operates at a high level of sophistication and is continually upgrading it's techniques, consistently scheming for new ways to commit business fraud and internet crimes. Clearly the evidence and all the industry trends demonstrate that there has been an evolution from happy hacking and virus writing for fun, to a profit-driven enterprise that creates malicious code and Trojans for profit, all the while committing various elements of white collar crimes and business fraud. Anti-cybercrime security professionals make it clear that the reality of the black markets of the cyber economy, where malware services are sold online, using the same kinds of guarantees and development methods given by legitmate software vendors.
As noted above, 2007 has become the benchmark year for Internet crime as the year when organized cyber criminals became serious about their marketing strategies in the cybercriminal world of business fraud activities. Their cybercrime schemes have become increasingly sophisticated and stealthy. Because of the “good-guys” computer users having to constantly protect themselves from the cyber thieves by always uploading updates for anti-virus and firewall protection, the Internet criminals have intensified their efforts by tricking and deceiving computer users into opening ‘backdoors’ into their own systems by convincing computer users to download malicious video or audio content (Trojans) from a web site that is benefiting from security holes in the computer user’s media player and browser. Such types of defects and flaws give cybercriminals the easy access they need to secretly upload and install malicious software that will/can control the user's machine remotely, the result of which is a multitude of business fraud and white collar crimes.
In 2009, a Reuters Study reported that businesses face serious risks from data theft. It's made clear that businesses risk losing over one trillion dollars from loss or theft of data and other cybercrimes and business fraud. Recently, McAfee, a legitimate security technology firm, has detected a rapid acceleration of malicious software (malware) in the last year. They have reported that such malware has increased by 400% in 2008. This version of malware was a truly insidious type of malicious software, designed to steal either your data, identity, money, or all of the above; the result would be a multitude of white collar crimes and many elements of business fraud. The most alarming part about this is the sheer scale and sophistication of so much of this cybercrime. Such alarms should alert your consideration for establishing a good fraud management and fraud detection plan and program for your company; this would certainly be a sound investment in the protection of your Florida Company from such cybercriminals.
