HOW TO RECORD A BAND
You finally have some recording equipment, a place to set up and your first band to record. How to record a band is not hard to do. It's fun and it requires some pre setup before they arrive. Depending on how many people are in this project will determine how many microphones you need to set up, guitar and bass amps to warm up and drum set microphones to use.
One tip to follow is keep the cables neat and somewhat organized to prevent someone from tripping and knocking over a mic stand. Neatness is important when having to troubleshoot a bad cable or locate a loose connection. The stress level will go out the roof if you are tracing a bad cord in a spaghetti tangle of wires. Recording, mixing and mastering great audio track quickly and efficiently comes with practice. Have fun!

You don't have to pull all the equipment out if you are only recording a single artist with a guitar. For the most part the drums are usually centered in the "live" room (that is where the band sets up) the bass amp can be on the right side, guitar amps on the left. It doesn't matter which side you choose just keep them apart for a good result. If they are placed to close to each other you can get "bleed thru". That is when the sound from one source bleeds into the other source's microphone causing an impure track.
Not everyone in the beginning can afford 10 to 15 microphones when starting out but you will need a few if your recording a band. You have choices always, nothing is written in stone, experiment with the placement of microphones to get the fattest and cleanest sound. Have the vocalist do a test run so you can adjust the mixer and recorder for optimum levels. Slam those drums hard to get them dialed in. Place a mic by the snare drum and hi-hat area, one by the kick bass, and one (two if possible) overhead microphone for the cymbals. Test the guitar and bass amps, adjust for clean hot level.
I find that the band really performs better and that "magic vibe" comes through the recording when they can be performing as a whole band together. You can record them individually but sometimes it adds a sterile feel to the final song and takes a bit longer to finish. When the band mates are jamming and looking at each other having a great time playing, the recording you capture will have the "magic vibe" in the end.
