Guitar Tutorials: Finding What You Need Online
Expressing emotions through music is a basic human ability. Some are born with this kind of talent, and seem to understand music instinctively. Most of us, however, need a few lessons in order to perform well. This is true for the guitar, which has evolved into one of the most universal and loved instruments in today's music. If you want to learn to play the guitar, instruction will be well worth the time and effort, and will last forever.
We are all familiar with the cartoon pictures of a child gazing sadly out the window, seeing his friends playing while he is forced to practice the piano. Later in life those lessons start to take on a new importance, and many of us regret not paying more attention. It is never too late to start learning how to play and create music. All it takes is a good teacher, a little time and practice.
Those childhood private lessons were probably not inexpensive for your parents, and they required a visit from the teacher, usually once a week. Today, however, music lessons are much more affordable and widely available on the Internet. Online courses cover everything from the most basic to advanced techniques. Take some time and explore the options available on line.
Don't sign up for the first course you come across in your web search. Make sure that the course you consider is thorough. Web-based videos, written instruction and illustration, or DVD training courses all can play a part in a solid learning program. Typically they start with the simple and progress to the complex. Don't choose a course more advanced than necessary, because that may be discouraging to a novice. Be honest with yourself about the scope of your own talent, and then choose instruction that fits your abilities.
The beginner needs to master some basic skills. The temptation is to jump right to the "good stuff", and skip the less exciting but necessary foundation. That foundation includes, of course, a decent six-string guitar, not necessarily expensive. You will also need a supply of picks of a light gauge to begin with, and your fingers will get sore at first. And, don't forget to bring patience and attention, because a simple love of music is not enough on its own. It needs to be channeled into useful knowledge.
What does that knowledge include? Different courses have slightly varying methods and progression, but all begin in the same general areas. The tutorial you choose should clearly and understandably illustrate the basic notes and chords. True novice musicians will learn the physical side of the instrument, including strings, their names, and the correct tuning pitches. Finger placement and strumming are also part of this foundation.
Once these are mastered, a good student will be able to actually begin to play songs. Today's guitar is an integral part of nearly every style of music we hear, from jazz to rock to pop. But, even though we live in an age of computers and video, a musician still needs the advantage of learning to read printed music. We've all heard the person who somewhat proudly proclaims he or she has never had a lesson. They probably have an incredible amount of talent, but if they can't actually read music, they are limited musically. A good guitar course will recognize this, and will not be limited to technique only.
A good online course will not stop at the basics of fingering and musical notation. From there it will teach more advanced chord structure, harmony and style, not to mention strumming techniques and rhythm skills. It will present these lessons in a way that progresses naturally, and can be followed at your own pace. If you want to learn to play the guitar on your own schedule, an online course is probably the best choice. Then you can surprise and delight your friends with your new talent and abilities, and master a skill that lasts for a lifetime.
